Giuseppe Tornatore’s Ennio (2021, 156’) is the Bagheria-born director’s twelfth feature film, a documentary about the life of Ennio Morricone. The film tells the story of a musical genius, primarily
through the statements and confessions of the great musician himself. The film tells the story of a prolific, yet often hidden, Italian genius, who sought to reveal himself just enough to his audience
and his music, without ever overdoing his prominence or musical virtuosity, as Giuseppe Tornatore’s beautiful documentary film tells us. The testimonies, through many significant interviews, of many Italian singers who have shaped the history of pop music in Italy, as well as directors, musicians, and composers, are valuable. This essay will examine Tornatore’s film from various perspectives, cinematic, historical, and musical.
